Simplified Social Security Updates for New Citizens

In a move aimed at enhancing convenience and efficiency for new citizens, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a significant update regarding the process for requesting Social Security number (SSN) updates. Starting April 1, applicants filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, will have the option to seamlessly request an original or replacement SSN or card and update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) without the need to visit an SSA office.

Simplified Procedure for New Citizens

With the introduction of the new edition of Form N-400 (dated 04/01/24), noncitizens applying for naturalization will have the opportunity to request an SSN or replacement card directly when submitting their application. This means that new citizens may no longer be required to make a trip to an SSA field office to apply for an SSN or replacement card or to provide documentation proving their U.S. citizenship status. However, it’s important to note that SSA may request additional information if necessary.

Transition to the Updated Form

Applicants who utilize the previous edition of Form N-400 (dated 09/17/19) will not have access to this option, as the SSA-related questions are exclusively included in the 04/01/24 edition. The updated version of Form N-400 will be available for online filing on April 1. To file Form N-400 online, applicants must first create a USCIS online account, offering a secure and convenient platform to submit forms, make payments, and track the progress of their immigration requests.

USCIS’ Commitment to Enhancing the Naturalization Process

USCIS has previously expressed its intention to expand the Enumeration Beyond Entry program to include applicants applying for U.S. citizenship, underscoring its dedication to streamlining the naturalization process and improving access to essential services for new citizens.
